Safes and Crime

As a Jewellers Block insurance broker I often hear the phrase "My store is Fort Knox".  The simple truth is that most jewellers do not understand what level of protection they truly have.  A safe or alarm system installed 10 years ago rarely offer the same level of protection provided by today's technologies.

"If man can make it, man can break it"; words to live by when deciding what level of protection your business requires.

As tools and technology has improved so has the level of sophistication used by criminals.  Safes that were once rated TL30 (tool resistant to 30 minutes) are no longer able to boast of such protection levels.

Over the past few years we have continued to see TL15, TL30 and TRTL30 rated safes compromised. The losses suffered by those businesses who have experienced a safe break in can be devastating.

The following video shows an UL TL30 entry test -

You may have picked up one important fact; the testers only worked on the door.  What most jewellers are unaware off is the fact that only the safe door is actually protected to the extent TL15, TL30 or TRTL 30.

Criminals are aware of the lack of protection on the back and sides of a safe and attack safes based on this weakness.  Safes that are compromised are rarely done so through the door.

If you're in the market for a safe, I would highly recommend that the following safes are purchased -

TL15X6
TL30X6
TRTL30X6

The X6 indicates that the safe has complete protection on all sides, thus making the safe much more resistant to attack.

If a safe upgrade is not an option you should at minimum have the following components installed in the safe

Door Contact
Vibration Sensor
Heat Sensor
